Louis W. Salter, 85, of Manistique, Michigan, passed away at the Schoolcraft Medical Care Facility on November 16, 2019, surrounded by his loving family.
He was born on January 6, 1934, to Louis and Viola (Morden) Salter in Manistique. He completed his schooling at Manistique Area Schools before enlisting in the United States Air Force. In 1962 he joined the Coast Guard where he served his country for 20 years as an engineer. He is also a Vietnam Veteran having served there from 1967-1968.
On January 30, 1960, Louis married the love of his life, Rita Hoar. They raised their family traveling the country with U.S. Coast Guard.
Louis was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Manistique. He was an avid hunter and fisherman. He also loved the time he could spend with his family and especially cherished his grandchildren. There was also a very special place in his heart for his two dogs, Rags and Baxter.
He is survived by his loving wife, Rita; daughter, Debra (Donn) Hagie of New Berlin, WI; sisters, Norma (Stanley) Ziranik and Joyce Salter, both of Detroit, MI; grandchildren, Crystal Gericke and Allison Metzger; and great-grandchildren, Rhett and Blake Gericke and Adalyn Metzger.
Louis is preceded in death by his parents; son, Lee Salter; and sisters, Myrle Quinn and Betty Salter.
A memorial service to honor Louis will take place at a later date.
Memorial donations may be directed to the Eva Burrell Animal Shelter or First United Methodist Church of Manistique.
