William Robert (Bob) Marsh, age 88, of Overland Park, Kansas, departed this world on November 16, 2019.

A Celebration of Life will be held at 2:00 p.m. Tuesday, November 26, 2019, at Campbell-Lewis Chapel in Marshall. Visitation will be held from 1:00 to 2:00 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. Inurnment with military rites will be in Mt. Olive Cemetery south of Marshall. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial contributions be sent to the Holden VFW Post 5844, 104 E. 2nd St., Holden, MO 64040.

Robert lived most of his life in Missouri, loved the Midwest and country living. As a teen, he worked the family farm with a team of horses, leaving little time for high school sports. He cleverly figured out a way to attend football games by becoming a yell leader for Marshall High School. He eventually joined the Owl track team and competed in high jump events. Upon graduation in 1949, he continued his farming career south of town. He married Barbara Jean Wilson in February of 1950, and together they raised three children, Dirk, Michelle and Brett. In 1954, he served his country in the U.S. Army as a SPC4, which took him to Korea before his tour ended. Returning to Marshall, he continued his vocation, but also began to hone his carpentry skills. He began a life-long avocation of volunteerism, serving as an elder at Mt. Olive Presbyterian Church, and on the Elgin R-12 school board.

In 1964, the family moved briefly to Phoenix, AZ, where he worked in building trades, before returning to Independence, MO, where he built houses with his brother, James Albert. In 1966, Robert found an opportunity to return to farming in Slater, MO, and enjoyed 21 years doing what he loved there. He became a member of the Optimist Club, Slater Christian Church, and Central R-2 School Board. In 1987, he retired from farming and returned to carpentry at the Lake of the Ozarks before relocating to Holden, MO, where he continued to enjoy country life until 2013. While in Holden, Robert was actively involved in the Holden VFW, and served once again as elder in the Holden Presbyterian Church. He continued to pursue his hobbies of hunting, fishing, horseshoes, gardening, and inventing, and with the help of neighbors, designed and constructed a light-duty bridge on his property in 2010. He enjoyed a cold beer and when asked which was his favorite, he’d reply, “Whatever is on sale!”

For over 15 years, he and his companion, Pauline Copas, traveled the U.S. by RV, and enjoyed visiting most of the National Parks. He loved experiencing U.S. history first-hand.

Robert is preceded in death by his mother, Minnie Clyde (LeFaivre) Marsh; his father, Edgar Barnett Marsh; three brothers, Charles Edgar, James Albert, and Clinton Wilbur; his sister, Alice Elizabeth; and his companion, Pauline Copas.

Survivors include his children, Dirk W. Marsh (Laura) of Knoxville, TN, Lynne Michelle (Marsh) Maher (Bob) of Leawood, KS, and Brett Lane Marsh (Cindy) of Slater, MO; as well as six grandchildren, five great-grandchildren and eight nephews and nieces.

The family would like to thank the incredible caregivers, nurses, and staff of Prairie Elder Care, Overland Park, KS, for their undying devotion to his daily needs, and for keeping him safe and well-cared for, with dignity, in the face of a relentless diagnosis. Also, thank you to Ascend Hospice for their gentle care and compassion, and especially to Carolyn Titus and Leslie Rottinghaus, for their special attention shown to Dad.
