Lillian Wintersole, 93, 'most optimistic person'

Lillian F. Wintersole was a person not easily dissuaded, a woman whose family used words like "indomitable" and "unconquerable" to describe her.

Mrs. Wintersole, formerly of Newport, who died Feb. 14 in Los Angeles, displayed those qualities time and again during her 93 years.

Like the wintry day during the 1937 flood when she and her husband, Bill, refused to let the rising waters of the Ohio River claim their new Frigidaire. The Wintersoles borrowed a rowboat, moored it at the door of their Ninth Street home and somehow wrestled the appliance into the craft without capsizing it.

"They had just bought that refrigerator and . . . they were determined to save it, " said her son, William R. Wintersole, of Van Nuys, Calif. "They got it into the boat and then to a truck. They used it for the next 20 years."

Mrs. Wintersole showed comparable determination when she and her husband started B&L; Realty in Newport in the 1950s. They not only sold farms and homes, but also bought rundown properties and rehabilitated them for resale. Often they fixed up the houses themselves.

"I was watching her one day stripping wallpaper and said, 'Mom, how high do you think you're gonna go, '" William Wintersole said. "She was the most optimistic person I've ever known. There was no 'high' for her."

She encouraged her son to adopt that approach to life, then gave him tools to succeed by teaching him to read before he entered school and enrolling him in a chorale music program. Later, she urged him to participate in grade and high school theater productions, and when he expressed a desire to pursue a career in show business, she told him to go for it.

He did, and he had a successful acting career, with recurring roles on "The Young and the Restless" and "General Hospital."

Until she moved to California in 2001 to live with her son, Mrs. Wintersole was active at Bellevue Baptist Church and in the International Order of Foresters and the Eastern Star.

"She offered an open heart and a helping hand, " said her son. "She helped many, many people financially."

Her husband, William F. Wintersole, died in 1993.

Survivors, in addition to her son, include two granddaughters, Kathy Ramsey of Cincinnati and Tiffany Harmon of Santa Cruz, Calif.; and three great granddaughters.

Services will be at 9:30 a.m. Saturday at Muehlenkamp-Erschell Funeral Home, Newport. Visitation will be from 7 to 8 p.m. there Friday. Burial will be in Alexandria Cemetery, Alexandria.

Memorials are suggested to Spina Bifida Association of Cincinnati, 245 Deborah Lane, White Oak, Ohio 45239.
