Sylvia was born on November 1, 1952 to Luke and Lila Riggins in Tampa, FL.
She attended local schools, including St. Peter Claver, Sacred Heart and she graduated from Howard W. Blake High School in 1970. A graduate of University of South Florida, Sylvia began her professional career as a Licensed Practical Nurse at Tampa General Hospital. She then went to spend thirty-eight years with the US Department of Veteran Affairs as a nurse, administrative officer and retiring as the Equal Employment Opportunity Manager. Although she retired, Sylvia was not done advocating for the employment rights of others. She started her own company, Diversity Solutions, where she worked as a mediator for the United States Postal Service, handling EEO related matters.
Sylvia accepted Christ early in life and was a faithful member of the First Baptist Church of College Hill where she also served on the usher board. She loved her family and happily took on the role of “Matriarch”. She served as a mentor for many and believed in giving back to her community. Sylvia took every opportunity to enjoy life. She loved to travel and was a member of the A.Y.E (Above Your Expectations) line dancing group.
As a young woman, Sylvia married Darnell Reaves, and in this union, she became a mother to her only loving daughter Kimberly Cherise Reaves. Sylvia later married Randall M. Jordan, in this union, she gained two stepdaughters, Shanda Cook and Lakithia Jordan. Randall and Sylvia spent over 30 years together and he preceded her in death in 2015.
As she transitioned into the next chapter of her life, she met James L. Bryant, Sr. and it was a match made in heaven. The two were married in a ceremony of love and happiness on January 13, 2018. In this union she gained three stepchildren; James Jr., Jamey and Tiffany Bryant. James and “his baby” as he affectionately called her, continued to travel, enjoy life and the company of their family and friends.
Sylvia is preceded in death by parents, Luke and Lila Riggins, stepfather Willie Harris Jr., brother Roderick Harris and nephew Chedrick Stergis.
She leaves behind with fond memories, her loving and devoted husband James Bryant Sr. Cherished memories of love with her supportive and loving daughter Kimberly Reaves. Stepchildren, Shanda Cook (Rodney), Lakithia Jordan, James Bryant Jr., Jamey Bryant and Tiffany Bryant. Her only sister Carolyn Riggins, four brothers, Michael Harrelson (Coretta), William Harris, Eric Harris (Faye), Edward Harris (Tina). A loving niece Twila Williams; Eight brothers-in-law Bobby Bryant, Richard Bennett Jr., Wayne Bennett Jr. (Denise), Curtis Brown, Rumel Jordan, Robert Jordan, Tony Jordan and Bernard Jordan. Six sisters-in-law, Maxine Bennett, Annette Allen, Sandra Mason (Thomas), Loretta Walden, Geraldine Brown and Kenyetta Harris. A loving son-in-law, Harold Lawrence; four grandchildren, Ashley and Marcus Lawrence, James Bryant III and Jayden Carroll; goddaughter, Janiya LeSure and a host of sorrowing relatives and friends.
