Mrs. Lula M. Simms was born October 8, 1917 in Vicksburg, Mississippi. She was the daughter of Rueben and Ledora (Jones) Henderson.
She was married to Leland B. Simms, he preceded her in death.

Lula graduated from Alton High School, and entered Junior College in Quindaro, Kansas. She graduated from Pittsburg Teacher's College with a degree in Education, teaching with The Alton School District for 47 years retiring in 1986. Lula continued her teaching skills at the former Trinity Lutheran Church, she served as past Social Ministries, and Commissioned Lay Evangelist.

As a Community Leader she served in various group receiving many awards, including The Allen Singers, East St. Louis and Vicinity Council Club Woman of the year, Illinois Association of Club Women Girls and Boys Inc., The Living Legend Award, U.F. W. Sylvester Frison Excellence in Education, Alton Museum of History & Art, YWCA 1999 Women of Distinction and others.

Lula was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church until the church closed, she became a member or Open Door Fellowship Church and was active until her health declined.
She loved God, her family, church and community.

On Monday November 11, 2019 (Veteran's Day), she gently received eternal rest and peace at Integrity Health Care of Godfrey.

She was blessed with 102 years. in addition to her parents and husband Leland, she was preceded in death by two daughters, Peggy Advant and Cynthia Musgraves.

She leaves to cherish precious and lasting memories her daughters Elizabeth (Mayo) Atkinson of East St. Louis; and Jewell Henderson of Arms, Kansas, nine grandchildren, Edward Shegog, Beryl Shegog both of East St. Louis; Christopher (Erin) Shegog of Florida; Darrell P. Simms; Charles Drake, Shannon Musgraves, Kyle Musgraves all of Alton; Mario Armstrong and Mina (Lafayette) Jordan both of California; a host of great and great-great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

Visitation Tuesday November 19, 2019 from 10:00 a.m. until time of service at 11:00 a.m.
Services will be held at Open Door Fellowship Church 929 Milnor Alton, IL 62002.
