Major League Baseball Player. For nine seasons (1956, 1959 to 1963 and 1965 to 1967), he was a pitcher with the New York Yankees, Washington Senators, Cincinnati Reds and California Angels. Born James Alton Coates, he attended Lively High School in Virginia, before signing with the New York Yankees as an amateur free agent in 1951. He made his Major League debut with the Yankees on September 30, 1956 but only had a brief taste of the big leagues, before returning to the Minor Leagues for two years. He returned in 1959 and produced an impressive 2.87 ERA in 37 games played that year. The following season (1960), he split time between the Yankees's starting rotation and bullpen and experienced an American League Pennant, while achieving all star status and recording a career high 13 wins. He would go on to contribute to two world championships with New York (1961 and 1962), however he struggled with a high ERA during stints with the Senators, Reds and Angels. During the course of his career, Coates (who threw sidearm) had the reputation for coming in on hitters which often resulted in knockdowns. A teammate of Jim Bouton, Coates is prominently referred to in his book "Ball Four" (1970). In 247 career regular season games, he compiled a 43 win, 22 loss record with a lifetime 4.00 ERA, in 683 innings pitched.
