She started teaching in a country school outside Seaton, Ill. (Sunbeam). The following year she took a position as the First Grade Teacher at Biggsville, Ill. where she taught for 25 plus years. During her years there she produced Spring and Christmas programs where each child had a special role. She was honored as Teacher of the Year and the School and Community gave her a wonderful send-off. Past principals, teachers, students, and families filled the gym at the grade school. She taught long enough that she had prior students' children. These were all fond memories that she spoke of often.
Once retired she enjoyed crafting this including quilts, afghans(knitted and crocheted), table runners, baby blankets, receiving blankets, jointed animals, dolls, cross-stitch, embroidery, and sweatshirts. Family, friends, and acquaintances, all have many lovely crafted things. She made sure each grandchild and great-grandchild will have or has an afghan upon graduation from high school. One of the crafts she enjoyed later in life was making paper plates and toilet paper candy containers for the children at the Biggsville, Yorkwood Schools, and her grandchildren and great-grandchildren's school classes as well as friends' grandchildren. Her candy containers are part of many children's and adult families' Valentine's, Easter, Halloween, and Christmas decorations. She enjoyed the thank you notes from the classes especially the first graders who spell as it sounds. She enjoyed reading, her motto, "if there isn't a body it is not worth reading". She enjoyed puzzles and was surprised on her 90th birthday with 90 puzzles. She loved the penny machines at the gambling casinos. She enjoyed playing 4-point pitch, and pinochle(single deck and cutthroat). She taught her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren the ins and out of Gin and they all loved playing with her. Her biggest enjoyment was get-togethers with family and friends who all experienced her wonderful charm, an abundance of love, and witty personality. She looked forward to family gatherings at Hermann, Mo., yearly trips to Casa Grande, Az., trips to Cedar Falls, Ia., and Christmas at her home, daughter's home, and at Robin and Travis's. After moving to Columbia monthly trips were made to Monmouth to lunch with teacher friends, and friends and to catch up on everyone's family.
