Major League Baseball Player, Coach, Professional Basketball Player. Player. For eleven seasons (1950 to 1960), he played at the outfielder and first baseman positions with the Washington Senators, New York Yankees, Kansas City Athletics, St. Louis Cardinals. Chicago Cubs and Los Angeles Dodgers. Born Irving Arnold Noren, he was raised in California where he played baseball at Pasadena High School. He enrolled at Pasadena City College where he played both baseball and basketball, however his collegiate years were interrupted while he served with the United States Army during World War II. Following his return home, he was signed by the Brooklyn Dodgers as an amateur free agent in 1946. He played three games at the forward position with the Chicago American Gears of the National Basketball League in 1947. After fully focussing on his baseball career, he was purchased by Washington in 1949 and made his Major League debut with the Senators on April 18, 1950. After he was acquired by the Yankees, he experienced two world championships (1952 and 1953) and achieved all star status in 1954. In 1,093 career regular season games, he compiled 857 hits and a .275 lifetime batting average. After retiring as a player, he remained in the sport and served as a Minor League manager, before returning to the Major Leagues as a member of Dick Williams' staff with the Oakland Athletics. While at this capacity, he experienced two world championships (1972 and 1973). He went on to a coaching stint with the Chicago Cubs.
