Born in Spicer, Minn., on July 21, 1930, Audrey attended grade school in Spicer, high school in Willmar (1948) and graduated from St. Olaf College in 1952 with a B.S. in Home Economics. She married James Homme in 1951. Her professional career included teaching positions in New London; North St. Paul, Minn., where she was honored as Minnesota's outstanding Home Economics Teacher; Port Washington and Milwaukee. Audrey was the Director of Family Day Care for Day Care Services for Children in Milwaukee. Her husband, a Lutheran pastor, served congregations in Viroqua, Port Washington, Milwaukee and First Lutheran in Eau Claire.
In Eau Claire, Audrey opened her own business, the Homme Weaving Studio and soon become known as an innovative designer of hand-woven garments and textile art. She grew to become an award-winning artist, winning 'Best of Show' honors at several Midwestern Art Shows. Audrey's unique designs and techniques were the subject of articles in leading weaving journals and she delighted in sharing her knowledge and love of weaving as mentor to many women in Eau Claire. She also used her creative brilliance in designing and sewing much of her own wardrobe.
Audrey had an adventurous spirit that enjoyed reading, attending Elderhostels and international travel with her husband, friends and family. She was an active member of AAUW, University Lutheran Church and loved playing bridge with a group of her St. Olaf classmates.
Audrey is survived by her husband of 56 years, two children, Nan (Jonathan) Yurkanis of Seattle, Wash., and Joel (Kelly) Homme of St. Paul, Minn.; her sister, Luverne Kleven of Strum and some special children from Appleton, Joe, Annie, Kristen, Jenna and Meggan. She was preceded in death by her parents, parents-in-law and brothers-in-law, Dennis Swanson and Noble Kleven.
Memorial services will be held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, July 17, 2007, at First Lutheran Church with Pastor Charles Gavin officiating. Family and friends may call one hour prior to services Tuesday at the church.
Memorials are to be given to the American Cancer Society, University Lutheran Church or First Lutheran Church.
