George McNatt was born circa 1855, in Roane County, Tennessee, the son of James W. McNatt and his wife, Mary (Clark) McNatt, who were married 14 Oct 1852 in Roane Co., TN. Following the death of James W. McNatt, his widow, Mary (Clark) McNatt, was married 17 Feb 1858, in McMinn Co., TN to John Fitch (b. 27 Jul 1825 in Sullivan Co., TN; living, 16 Oct 1903, at Ten Mile Stand, Meigs Co., TN), who is found at various times residing in McMinn and Meigs Counties in Tennessee. Ten Mile Stand, the community in Meigs County where they resided, was close to the county borders with McMinn and Roane Counties.

George McNatt was married on 9 Sep 1873 in Meigs Co., TN to Adelia Mathews. He was enumerated in the 1880 census residing in Meigs County, Tennessee on 1 Jun 1880 in the sixth civil district. He is listed as 25 years old. His wife’s name is given as “Minerva C.” (age, 27 years) apparently indicating his wife, Adelia Mathews, had died and he had remarried. He is enumerated with two children: Sarah A., 4 years old (born circa 1876); and Maggie E., 1 year old (born circa 1879). Sarah A. McNatt and Maggie E. McNatt are specifically identified in the census enumeration as being the daughters of George McNatt. A boarder, William McGinnes, aged 57 years, is also listed as residing in the George McNatt household in the 1880 census. Neither George McNatt nor his daughter Maggie have been found in the 1900 census enumeration. Whether George McNatt’s daughters were the children of his first wife, Adelia, or his apparent second wife, Minerva, remains unclear. George McNatt apparently died not long after the 1880 census enumeration. His elder daughter, Sarah Elberta, indicated she was orphaned when she was a very young child.

George McNatt's daughter, Sarah Elberta McNatt, was informally adopted by her paternal grandmother, Mary (Clark) McNatt Fitch, and step-grandfather, John Fitch, and taken into their household following the death of her father, George McNatt. She was reared with her younger Fitch half-aunts and half-uncles.

Sarah Elberta McNatt was married on 2 May 1894 in Meigs County, Tennessee to Andrew Thomas Powers (d. 1952), a son of James Robert Powers and his wife, Nancy Matilda (Hope) Powers. Although the name is sloppily written in the marriage book, her name is written as "Miss Sarah Al McNatt".
