Sister Mary Joan Kirchner, 99, of St. Mary-of-the-Woods died at 12:32 a.m. Wednesday, April 5, 2000, in Karcher Hall. She was a teacher and administrator. The former Marguerite Rose Kirchner was born Feb. 24, 1901, in Terre Haute to Peter Kirchner and Mary Haring Kirchner. Survivors include nieces and cousins. She was preceded in death by two sisters, Helen Welsh and Agnes Duncan; and four brothers, Paul Kirchner, Clarence Kirchner, Robert Kirchner and Leonard Kirchner. She attended St. Benedict Grade School, St. Joseph Academy and Indiana State Normal School, all in Terre Haute, receiving her bachelor's degree in science from St. Mary-of-the-Woods College and her master's degree in education from Indiana State University. She entered the Congregation of the Sisters of Providence June 7, 1922, professed First Vows Aug. 15, 1925 and Final Vows Aug. 15, 1930. She taught in schools staffed by the Sisters of Providence in Indiana, Illinois, District of Columbia and California, including St. Mary-of-the-Woods College and Sisters of Providence in St. Mary-of-the-Woods. She was a council member and director of education for the Sisters of Providence for 12 years. Mass of Christian Burial is 11 a.m. Friday in the Church of the Immaculate Conception, with the Rev. Lawrence Richardt officiating. Burial is in the Cemetery of the Sisters of Providence. Wake is 3 p.m. today in Providence Hall, with wake service at 4:30 p.m., in the church. The Callahan Funeral Home assisted with arrangements.
