Agnes Glenwood Burr Mathes 1867 - 1943
Agnes G. Burr daughter of Joseph and Ruth Burr was born in Pennville, Jay county Indiana October 14 1867 and departed this life at the St. Rose hospital, Great Bend, Kansas, July 20, 1943 being 75 years, 9 months, and 6 days old at the time of her death.
In 1874 she moved with her parents to Smith county, Kansas and in February 1888 to Wichita county, Kansas. On February 26, 1890 she was married to Wm. F. Mathes who proceeded her in death March 18, 1922. To this union two sons were born. Lloyd of Leoti, Kansas, and Ralph of Homa, Louisiana. Ralph is an Entomologist employed by the government and Lloyd a farmer of Wichita county.
She is also survived by one brother, Hiram A. Burr, Marienthal, Kansas, three grandchildren, Thelma, Darrell and Lynne and great grandchild, Sondra Jan.
Mrs. Mathes a true pioneer woman endured the hardships of the days following the Civil War, the grasshopper year, Kansas droughts, and the struggle of pioneers for an education. She taught two terms of school, one in Smith County and one in the north Wichita county. She was a member of the Leoti Presbyterian church and served as Elder for the past 12 years. She was also clerk of the session for six years. Was active in lodge work, a charter member of the Rebekah Lodge and a member of the Eastern Star of Leoti.
She was always a friend to young people and never too old to see and understand their problems. Yes, Mother Mathes, as she was known is at rest, but she leaves a heritage of an exemplary life of high ideals, kindly living and great understanding.
