Mr. John Wesley Monroe, 88, passed away on Saturday, November 2, 2019, after a long illness at St. Mary's Hospital (VITAS). He was the husband of Ruth (Webber) Monroe for 46 years.
Mr. Monroe was born on December 31, 1930, in Laurinburg, NC, to the late Less and Martha (Easterling) Monroe.
Mr. Monroe attended school in Laurinburg and helped work on the farm with his parents, until he was 18. At the age of 18, he moved to New York to obtain better work. He got married and had three children. After divorcing his first wife, he met and married Ruth (Webber) Monroe in 1973, and they shared two sons. John worked as Maintenance at Windsor Oaks in Bayside, NY, and as a custodian at Nassau (BOCES) Educational School for several years, until his retirement in 1995.John loved watching cowboy movies, bowling, fishing, and playing softball. He was a Mason in Lodge 33 in Brooklyn, NY. While in NY, John became a Deacon and was very active in multiple churches. Other than being a Deacon, he served as an usher, singing in the church choir, and began being the lead singer for a male quartet while attending Solid Rock Baptist church in Jamaica, NY. In 2003, John and Ruth moved to Waterbury, CT and joined Greater Faith Word of God Ministries. He was a devoted Deacon that kept the House of God Cleaned. Deacon Monroe loved singing "Do Lord Remember Me" and he sung it every Sunday. He will be missed by all that loved and knew him.
Besides his wife, he leaves to celebrate and cherish his life two sons; Michael (Mary Alice) Monroe of Waterbury CT , and Johnathan Monroe of Cockeyville MD., three daughters; Diane Goodson , Sherry Monroe both of Norcross, GA , and Marshshannon Rivera of Long Island NY , grandchildren; Deshaun Monroe-Holden of Norcross, GA , Shanice Mayo, Michael Jordan Monroe, Brianna Monroe, Jalen Monroe all of Waterbury CT, Debbie Monroe and Daniel Monroe of Cockeyville MD, and a host of other grandchildren and great grandchildren, two sisters; Thelma Hunt and Louise Dunlap both of Laurinburg, NC, one Godson Eric Frazier of Irvington NJ., and a host of nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by a son Michael "Big Michael" from his marriage, three sisters; Anna May Campbell, Lessie Lee Crossland and May Della Pratt, and one brother Jessie Monroe.
Special thanks to his grandson Michael J for being his grandfather's chauffer and helper during his illness.
