Gilbert C. Greenway, 88, a former officer of the Central Intelligence Agency who served as deputy assistant secretary of the Air Force during the Eisenhower administration, died of complications related to internal hemorrhaging Dec. 17 at his home in Nassau, Bahamas.
Mr. Greenway was also an aircraft pilot who during World War II was a test pilot for Grumman Corp., which manufactured Navy fighters. Before the war and immediately afterward, he was a pilot with Gillies Aviation on Long Island.
Mr. Greenway, a longtime resident of Washington, was born in Greenwich, Conn., and graduated in 1934 from Yale University.
He came to Washington in 1949, when he began his career with the CIA. He was with the agency for six years, including two years in Greece. He then served as deputy assistant secretary of the Air Force until the fall of 1960, when he retired from federal service.
In retirement, Mr. Greenway purchased a boat, which he lived on for various periods. He also served as chairman of the board of a small commercial airline in Kenya.
He was a member of the Metropolitan Club, the Chevy Chase Club and the New York Yacht Club.
He settled in the Bahamas about four years ago.
His wife, Lucia Thompson Greenway, died in 1994, and their son, Gilbert C. Greenway Jr., died in 1981.
Survivors include three children, Nelse Greenway of Chevy Chase, Lauder Greenway of Bethesda and Sara O'Dea of New York City; and eight grandchildren.
