Lewis Legare Simpson was born about April 1843 in Hingham, Massachusetts. He was the child of Eliza Freeman and George W. Simpson, and the husband of Maria D. Johnson.
During the American Civil War, he served with Company G of the famous 54th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry. He enlisted on 25 November 1863 from Hingham. He was wounded in action on 30 November 1864 at the Battle of Honey Hill, and discharged 25 May 1865.
His wife Maria and their toddler daughters Ruth (b. 1861) and Isabel (b. 1863) welcomed him home from his service. The family relocated to Bridgewater, Massachusetts by 1880, adding to their family: Benjamin (b. 1866), Loretta (b. 1868), Prescott (b. 1873), George (b. 1875), Alden (b. 1878), Wendell (b. 1880), Carlton (b. 1883), and Edith (b. 1887.)
Private Simpson worked as a day laborer and a shoemaker.
He and his wife both died in 1918.
