Lifelong Newberry resident, Max L. Anderson Sr., 84, died Friday morning November 8, 2019 at his residence with his loving family at his side and the care of North Woods Hospice. Max was born October 3, 1935 in Newberry and was so proud of being a tried and true "Yooper".
Max attended school in McMillan and Newberry, completing his education in the United States Air Force. He served in the Radar service in Rabat, North Africa and Sault Ste. Marie during the Korean War and continued in the United States Air Force Reserve until his honorable discharge on September 30, 1960.
Max was employed at the former Newberry Regional Mental Health Center for over 30 years until his retirement. Max was a member of Our Redeemer Lutheran Church in Newberry. He was a member of the American Legion Post #74 where he served as adjutant for several years with over 50 years of membership. He enjoyed 45 years belonging to the Fraternal Order of Elks #1705 serving as secretary and was a charter member of the Eagles Club #3701 where he held the secretary's position for 12 years. Max loved golfing which he took up late in life and enjoyed his time on the "links" with his partners. He loved to play cards participating in the cribbage league and euchre groups where ever he found them and was an ardent fan of the Detroit Tigers and Lions. Max was a proud participant of Mission #10 of the U.P. Honor Flight to Washington, D.C. in May of 2016 with fellow veterans from the Upper Peninsula.
Max is survived by his loving wife of 48 years, the former Carol Everling of Newberry; children Cyndi (Tim) McBride of Newberry, Karl Edward Kalnbach of Newberry, Lisa K. Anderson of McMillan, Max L. (Lisa) Anderson of Marquette and April Winters of Hayden, ID; grandchildren T.J. (Melanie) McBride, Christian (Jenny) McBride, Shelbi Blakely, Sydni Brodock, Jayci Ann Gilbert and Alex Anderson; great-grandchildren Jillian and Caleb McBride and Jakob Kisro; beloved sister Shirley (Richard) Musgrave of McMillan who he referred to as his "baby sister" although she was his elder; daughter-in-law Rosemary Anderson of Newberry.
Max is preceded in death by his mother Lillian H (Vining) Tanner, brother Nevin Anderson, son Jay Anderson and granddaughter Dominique Kalnbach.
Max and Carol traveled extensively since their retirement, have RV adventures with their friends and make new ones around the United States. Their grandchildren have also traveled with them and the memories come to mind whenever the family gathers. Max was a beloved husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, uncle, brother and friend. We will never forget our "adventures".
Graveside services with full military honors conducted by the American Legion Post #74 and the United States Air Force Honor Guard will be held in the spring of 2020 at West Lakefield Township Cemetery.
Memorials may be directed to the U.P. Honor Flight, 7542 J Road, Gladstone, MI 49837 or Our Redeemer Lutheran Church in his memory.
