James Walker “Jay” Smiley completed his journey home on Saturday, November 2, 2019 to the welcoming words, “Well done, my good and faithful servant.”

Jay was born in Staunton, Virginia on December 22, 1937 to the late Roy Thomas Smiley and Athealine Mary Berry Smiley.

For many years, he owned and operated a NAPA Auto Parts Store in Kinston. Jay proudly served his country in the United States Navy. He received a Master in Religious Studies at Grand Rapids Baptist College and Seminary.

Jay loved Adamsville Baptist Church and was a dedicated and faithful member. He was devoted to his church, served as a deacon, and was involved in many activities where he utilized his gifts and abilities to share the love of God. Jay had a large extended circle of family and friends and they were all very special to him. Above all, he loved spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren. He will be missed.

A graveside service with military honors will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Wednesday, November 6, 2019 at the Eastern Carolina State Veterans Cemetery with Roger Wayne Shull and Rev. Michael Wright officiating.

Jay is survived by his wife of 59 years, Gloriadine Duncan Smiley; daughters, Allison Smiley Penwell and husband David of Chapin, SC and Angela Jay Smiley and fiancée Steven Aldridge of LaGrange; grandchildren, Jacob Walker Smiley of Charlotte and Alexandria Skye Penwell of Greenville, SC; and brother, Thomas Grier Smiley.

In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his half-sister, Jane Ramsey Shipp.
