The native Chumash names of Petra María and her mother were not recorded. She was about 12 to 13 years old when she requested baptism into the Roman Catholic Church on December 8, 1773 (SLO Baptism 00032). She was the daughter of neophytes Pablo "Tecum Stefuamo" (SLO Baptism 00023-SLO Death 00869) and María Concepción (SLO Baptism 00024-SLO Death 00613), both residents of ranchería Chiguegua. Her Godmother was María Loreta, a neophyte from Mission Santa Gertrudis, Baja California, who had married soldado Bernardo Alcantará, then part of the mission's escolta (escort). After her death the following year Petra María's remains were brought to the mission where she was buried in the mission cemetery April 19, 1774 (SLO Death 00002). Like most Native Americans of her day, Petra María did not have a surname.
