Celia Irene Dodd of Fredericksburg, Texas | 1944 - 2019 | Obituary
(Known by many as Celia, Irene, Sister, Mrs. Dodd, Aunt Rene or Aunt Irene)

September 18, 1944 - August 10, 2019

Celia Irene (Capps) Dodd of Fredericksburg, Texas passed away on Saturday, August 10, 2019 at the age of 74 from colon cancer.

Known by many as Celia, Irene, Sister, Mrs. Dodd, Aunt Rene or Aunt Irene, Grannie, Mom and Momma, she leaves behind a legacy of valuing family, appreciating each moment, and so much love.

She was born on September 18, 1944 in Jayton, Texas to Sarah Margaret (Durham) Capps and Walter Eldridge Capps. While her early years were spent in Kent County, she grew up in Brady, Texas after the family moved to the Texas Hill Country in 1949. Celia attended Brady High School for three years, but she graduated from Abilene High School in 1962, having gone to live with her older sister, Kathleen Ann, for her final year. Celia attended Tarleton State College in 1962-63 as a freshman with math as her major and was an active member of the Tarleton State Rodeo Club. Celia married Elgin Lewis Dodd on June 20, 1964 in Mason, Texas. Together they lived in San Antonio for several years before moving to Buda so that Lewis was closer to school at the University of Texas. During that time, Celia worked at Camp Mabry Army Base in Austin. After college, they moved to Denver, Colorado where their two daughters were born. They remained in Denver for about five years before deciding to move back to Texas and be closer to family. Celia and Lewis settled into Fredericksburg, Texas to raise Kim and Becky. At some point in time, Irene, as she was known by family, started going by her first name, Celia. So, she’s known to family as Irene and those who met her a bit later in life as Celia.

During her more than 40 years in Fredericksburg, Celia worked for Althaus Acres auction house, Allen Keller Company, and the Fredericksburg Independent School District in the special education department, at the high school, and for the superintendent’s office. She was an active supporter and leader of the Girl Scouts, volunteered many hours at the Gillespie County Fair Association, was a proud FHS Marching Band parent, was an avid Bunco player, and greatly enjoyed attending services at the Fredericksburg Church of Christ. After her cancer diagnosis in 2017, Celia lived with Kim’s family in Bethesda, Maryland while she underwent treatment and took delight in many joyful moments with her three grandchildren.

The youngest of eight, Celia was the adorable baby of the family, and she always had the brightest smile that would light up a room. Celia was from tough stock and had a lot of grit. She never complained and persevered through many difficult times with integrity, grace, and dignity. Hard-headed and stubborn, Celia could dig in her heels better than most, but her deep love and affection for those in her life was always present. She truly wore her heart on her sleeve, and her spirit shone brightly.

Celia loved to read, garden and tend her many, many plants, play canasta, watch musicals, blast a Sousa march while dusting, and go out to eat for brunch (or a late breakfast as she was not an early morning person). Celia inherited her mother’s talkative nature and could regale you with stories filled with incredibly specific details despite the fact that the events took place more than fifty years ago. Her memory was amazing, and so was her knowledge of relationships among the people in her life. Celia was warm, open-hearted and always encouraged her daughters in all of their various pursuits. Whether it was a dance recital, basketball game or track meet, cheerleading or marching band competition, theatre production, or watching her girls receive their Girl Scout Gold Awards, Celia was there proudly supporting and helping Kim and Becky. The same was true for attending her grandchildren’s events. Grannie was there for births, baptisms, first communions, dance recitals, Christmases, Easters, and many birthdays with her eyes brimming with pride and the warmest smile on her face.

She leaves her daughter, Kimberle E. Dodd of Bethesda, Maryland and her husband William D. Jacques; her daughter Rebecca M. Dodd of Los Angeles, California; and her sister Kathleen Ann Clarke of Thorhild, Alberta, Canada and her husband John S. Clarke. She had three adored grandchildren, W. Nathaniel Jacques, Lillian Isabella Jacques, and Vivienne Margaret Jacques; and many cherished nephews and nieces, along with countless cousins and extended family.

In lieu of flowers, the family has requested donations to The American Cancer Society or Montgomery Hospice, who took such loving care of her in her final weeks at Kim’s home in Maryland. A memorial service and luncheon reception will be held in Fredericksburg in the historic Sanctuary at the Pioneer Museum on Saturday, December 28 from 10:30 a.m. until 3:00 p.m. for a final farewell before a private burial ceremony takes place with family members at Clairemont Cemetery at a later time. The Sanctuary at the Pioneer Museum is located at 312 W. San Antonio Street, Fredericksburg, Texas 78624. Guests can park on the public street or in the St. Mary’s Catholic Church parking lot adjacent to the museum. The formal program will begin at 10:30 a.m.

Celia was incredibly loved and will be greatly missed by all who knew her. She’s continuing to watch over all of us with a fond and lovely smile as we get up to mischief and she rests in peace.
