James Lola Hill died December 31, 1917 of paralysis, at his residence near Clio North Carolina. By special request he was buried at Clio Church, being the first burial there in the history of the church which had been established more than 25 years. Because there were no other buried graves at Clio, he was later moved to Pisgah Church Cemetery.

James Lola Hill was the eldest of three known children of Prof. James Henry Hill (1832-1919) and Laura Elizabeth Gillespie (1838-1863), who married 01 Nov 1857 at presumably North Carolina. After Laura died, James Henry remarried to Grace Martin (???-1883), but had no known children with her. After Grace died James Henry remarried to the widow Annie Margaet Harrington McGilvary (1854-1896). James Henry and Annie were the parents of one known child. After Annie died, James Henry remarried to Louise Hall (1865-1951) on 29 Oct 1910 at presumably North Carolina but had no known additional children.

James first married to Julia A. McCorkle (1863-1889) on 24 Aug 1884 at Mooresville, Iredell County., North Carolina. Soon after marrying the family moved to Fannin County, Texas. James and Julia were the parents of one known child, namely:

After Julia A. died, James remarried to Eva Nevada Shuford (1872-1963) on 05 Jan 1893 at Hunt County, Texas. James and Eva were the parents of nine known children, namely:
