She was born on February 27, 1929 in Mount Vernon, the daughter of Lowell and Evelyn Hughes of Fir Island.
Barbara was preceded in death by her parents and her brother James Hughes.
She is survived by her two daughters, Sarah Giddings of Pennsylvania and Martha McMurty of Rhode Island, and by her sister Margaret Semrau, sister-in-law Donna Hughes both of Mount Vernon and several nieces and nephews.
Barbara attended Mount Vernon schools before entering Oberlin Conservatory of Music in Ohio. She then continued her studies at the University of Kentucky where she obtained her Bachelor and Masters degrees in Music. After a few years of teaching and playing the piano and pipe organ she entered the University of Illinois where she earned her Doctorate in Musicology. She then held various positions as college professor and dean, retiring from the University of Massachusetts - South Darmouth where she served as Dean of the School of Visual and Performing Arts and made her home. She enjoyed a long history as a church organist which was her instrument of choice.
A memorial service was held in Newport, Rhode Island.
