Obituary - Montgomery County Sentinel (Rockville, Maryland), March , 1874:

DIED,—At Oakley, Montgomery county, Md., on the 19th inst., MILCAH W. RIGGS, wife of the Hon. Samuel Riggs, of R., aged 61 years, 2 months and 7 days.

In Memoriam—M. W. R.

DIED, suddenly, of apoplexy, at her residence in Montgomery county, Md., February 19th, 1894, MILCAH W. RIGGS, beloved wife of Samuel Riggs, of R., and daughter of the late Col. Lyde Griffith, aged sixty-one years, two months and seven days.

The sudden and abrupt termination of the life of this most excellent woman again proclaims the oft-repeated warning, that "in the midst of life we are in death." In the morning, apparently enjoying her accustomed good health, prosecuting her domestic occupations with more than usual vigor and activity; — without even a premonition heralding the approach of dissolution, the sun had scarcely passed the meredian before she was cold in the embrace of death. The family circle replete with the joys and comforts which make life cheerful and happy—with no thoughts of the already uplifted chastening rod, is in the short space of a few minutes overwhelmed with grief for the loss of a devoted wife and an affectionate, indulgent, but ever careful mother, and society wears a shade of solemnity for the loss of one of its most valued exemplars. Plain and unostentatious in her manners, frank and hospitable to all—possessing a warm heart—a generous, sympathizing nature, "chastend and adorned by the mellowing influence of Divine grace, she was ever ready to lend a helping hand to relieve the sorrows and misfortunes of others. But alas! she is dead; in undisturbed tranquility she sleeps in the silent grave, but we are solaced by the convictions that she has exchanged the fetters of earth, and the gloom of this life, for the changeless realities of a better world.

On who knew her intimately, more than twenty years, offers this humble tribute to the memory of her many virtues. Much more that is good might be said of her, but her memory is embalmed in the hearts of all who knew her, and her remembered virtues will long shed a sweet influence over the community which so highly esteemed her.

"Hast ever seen a bright-rayed star stuggling to burst
The eveloping clouds, that hid its sofe, pure beams?
And looking, hast not seen it break with radiant glemas
Its prison bars, in purer luster than at first.
Ere darksome clouds had gathered o'er it an dispersed?
So passed her spirit out from earth-formed clouds at even
Into the shining star-dom of God's upper sky
To beam resplendent mid the undimmed orbs on high?
Or hast thou not beheld at morning's holy hour
Unfolding in rare lovliness, some fragrant flower;
Its tears night-gathered, all transmuted into pearls
In the clear light the springtime's balmy morn unfurls?
So she, a flower, to the safe parterre of heaven
In all her wealth of love and purity was given.
