Shirley G Reid, 82, previously of Fort Plain NY and recently of Fort Washington PA, passed quietly into eternal rest on Thursday October 31, 2019. She was born June 20, 1937 in Ilion NY and was the first daughter of Charles and Elizabeth (Janeka) Grose. She contracted polio as an infant and was a childhood patient at Shriners Hospital in Philadelphia. During the material shortages and restrictions of WWII, her doctors wrote a prescription for indoor plumbing in her family home so Shirley could do physical therapy exercises for her newly operated-on leg in the bathtub. In agriculture class at Mohawk Central School she met Robert H. Reid. They married on March 30, 1957 in South Ilion Methodist Church. They were dairy farmers at several locations in the Ilion, Jordanville, and Fort Plain areas. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Robert, and a sister Dorothy. She is survived by her sister Patricia of Colorado, daughter Phyllis Reid Anderson of Fort Washington PA, son Ralph of Viera, Florida, and son Roger who now owns and operates the family farm outside Fort Plain, their spouses, ten grandchildren, and six great-granddaughters. Calling hours will begin Tuesday at 10am at Cherry Valley United Methodist Church, with the service at 11, followed by luncheon, then by 1pm proceeding to Oak Hill Cemetery in Herkimer where Shirley will be buried beside her mother. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial gifts to Cherry Valley United Methodist Church.
