Benjamin Allen Crawford, III, age 64, passed away on December 2, 2018, surrounded by his family, from complications following a liver transplant.
Ben was born in Clarksdale, Mississippi, on February 27, 1954, to the late Benjamin Allen Crawford, Jr. and Juanita Crawford. He attended Mississippi College and rooted for the Mississippi State Bulldogs (and the LSU Tigers as long as they weren't playing MSU). Benny, as many of his friends and family called him, had a very particular, but not-so-rare disorder that caused him to yell irrational things at television sets and referees alike when his teams were not performing to his standards.
Food was a passion of Ben's, and he was an excellent cook. Later in life, he gave up beans, which, believe you me, was very much appreciated by those closest to him (literally and figuratively). Let's just say that the man played many instruments. He loved to travel and was a great road trip companion. Music wasn't the only art he enjoyed as he also loved photography and passed that passion on to his children.
With over two decades in Baton Rouge and New Orleans, Ben made his way to Virginia and then Maryland for work where he spent the last ten years, most recently in Clarksville. Ben made friends wherever he went and always was quick with a joke. His love of music was also passed onto his children, and he played with various bands from churches to dive bars whenever he could find the time. Ben had many aliases over the years: Lampshade Benny, Big Ben, Daddy Dumbbutt, and Grandaddy Dumbbutt.
Ben will forever be remembered by his devoted girlfriend, Nancy Robinson; his former wife, Beth Bush Crawford, and their children, Jeremy Crawford, Christian (Aimee) Crawford, Hannah Crawford, Katie (Neal) Bonham, and his grandchildren Caleb Joseph, Emma Rose, and Townes William. He is also survived by his brother Frank Crawford, sister Paula Williams, and mother Juanita Crawford as well as numerous nieces and nephews. He will also be remembered by Nancy's children, Adam White and Jennifer (Edgar) Guzman White, and her grandson Lucas Guzman White.
A visitation and memorial service will be held at First United Methodist Church in downtown Baton Rouge on Saturday, December 15 at 10:00 am (visitation at 10:00, service at 11:00). A celebration of his life will follow at Brickyard South at 12:00 pm. We will have instruments for anyone who would like to pay tribute via song and jambalaya will be served. Come as you are to celebrate Ben's life with music, fellowship, food, and laughter.
