Von attended Loren Farr Elementary in Ogden, UT, graduated from Ogden High School and attended aviation school in Troutdale, OR. On June 14, 1964, he married Alta Elizabeth Ballard in Elko, NV. They made their home in Idaho Falls, where Von worked for School District #91 as a safety inspector. Von was a Christian and had strong love for his Father in Heaven. It showed through in his love for life. He was also a professional musician throughout his life and a professional pilot, working as a flight instructor, and as a crop-duster pilot. He also had the occasion to fly fire fighting aircraft. He enjoyed leatherwork, making knives, fishing, prospecting, and anything outdoors with children and grandchildren. Survivors beside his loving wife included: daughters Rebecca Heather (Erick) Neher and Jennifer Ann Buxton, both of Idaho Falls; sister Natalie (Boyd) Keisel of Richfield, UT; and 14 grandchildren.
