Leah Ruth Walker, age 89, of Yakima passed away on October 26, 2019. She was born in Bethune, Colorado on February 28, 1930 to John and Mary Schaal. During the depression the Schaal family moved from Colorado, eventually ending up in the Yakima Valley. Leah graduated from Wapato High School in 1948 and St. Elizabeth’s Nursing School in 1951.
In 1951 Leah was wed to Wayne Wesley Walker whom she had met at her best friend’s wedding. The couple raised four children: David, Patricia, Tim and Cynthia. Leah worked for 44 years as a registered nurse both in the Puget Sound and Yakima Valley areas.
In 1995 Leah retired from nursing; she and Wayne spent the next several years traveling and visiting relatives. Leah enjoyed gardening, playing the piano, sewing, women’s bible study, cooking and being involved with her grandchildren doing various activities.
For many years Leah was an avid bowler, bringing home many trophies.
Leah was preceded in death by both her parents, her husband Wayne, a sister, and her son David. She is survived by her sister Esther Smith of Chico, California; her daughter Patricia Walker of Walla Walla; son Tim Walker of Yakima; a daughter, Cynthia Nichols of Yakima; six grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. A celebration of life will be held on November 1, 2019 at Valley Hills Funeral Home and Crematory starting at 3 pm.
