Mr. Edward R. Whitfield of Hinesville was born to Mr. George Edward Whitfield and Rosa Lee Whitfield of Suffolk, Va., on Nov. 12, 1941.
The second of eight children, Edward married Barbara R. Hicks on Aug. 17, 1963, and became a dedicated husband and father of four. He was a career soldier in the United States Army and after two tours of Vietnam and 28 years, he retired in Hinesville. He enjoyed fishing and absolutely loved working on cars and engines.
Edward was a caring man with a humble spirit, comforted by the sound of rain, sitting along the side of a lake and his wife's voice. He supported his family in any and all endeavors and was a backbone and constant supporter of his wife's ministry.
As a deacon in the church, Edward helped groom and develop many young men in the Lord. He was a man of sound judgment, integrity and always had a smile on his face.
Edward enjoyed spending time with his entire family and absolutely loved his four grandchildren.
Mr. Edward Randolph Whitfield Sr., 72, went home to be with the Lord from St. Joseph's Hospital in Savannah on Friday, Feb. 28, 2014.
Edward is praising and rejoicing with those he was preceded by, his beloved wife, Barbara R. Whitfield of Suffolk; his son, Edward R. Whitfield Jr. of Suffolk; his brother, Sydney E. Whitfield of Suffolk; his father, George E. Whitfield of Suffolk; and his mother Rosa Lee Whitfield of Suffolk.
His life will continue to be celebrated by his dedicated children, daughter, Renata D. Trout, son, Sheldon Whitfield, daughter, Letitea Whitfield; and four loving grandchildren, Chelsea Whitfield, Logan Trout, Xavier Whitfield and Ashton Whitfield; siblings; Capotria Barett of Suffolk, Robert L. Whitfield of Suffolk, Melvin E. Whitfield of Suffolk, Curtis E. Whitfield of Suffolk, Mary Alice Hall of Gates, N.C., and George Whitfield of Washington, D.C.; and a large extended family of nieces and nephews and friends in the Lord.
Remembering that he always put God first, he was a soldier always, and he kept family above all. Edward R. Whitfield will be deeply missed, but his light will shine brightly in the words and deeds of those who loved and respected him.
Visitation will be 1-5 p.m. Friday, March 7, at Dorchester Funeral Home, 7842 E. Oglethorpe Highway in Midway.
