Sandee was diagnosed with ALS in April 2018; she moved from Grand Marais, Michigan to live with her daughter, Treva Gorski, in October 2018 in Williamston, MI. On the Monday before Sandee died, Treva called Hospice, but Sandee died peacefully in her sleep at The Marquette, East Lansing, MI very early that next Thursday morning, May 2, 2019, before more than meeting the social worker had transpired.

Sandee was born September 5, 1945, Detroit, Michigan. With her parents, she moved to her mother's home town of Trout Creek, MI in 1946 and they settled in Sault Ste. Marie, MI in 1950 (Sault Sainte-Marie in French means "the Rapids of Saint Mary". The Saint Mary's River runs from Lake Superior to Lake Huron; between what are now the twin border cities on either side.)

Sandee moved to Grand Marais, MI from Munising, MI with her U.S. Coast Guard husband in 1973. She started working for the Grand Marais Chamber of Commerce in 1976. Sandee was Secretary-Receptionist for the Burt Township Supervisor, Frank Mead, from September 1978 until he retired then to his successors--Jack Hubbard for ten years--and the current Supervisor. Under the current Supervisor, her ALS symptoms began to appear before diagnosis--her voice was different; her speech was somewhat impaired; etc., so she unwillingly retired in 2018.

As an employee of the Chamber of Commerce and Burt Township Board, Sandee was their representative to the Alger County Overall Economic Development Planning Committee (OEDP) and Central Upper Peninsula Planning and Development (CUPPAD) Commission from 1977 to 1992. Sandee served on sub-committees such as the sign committee and cross-country ski trail committee for Alger County. She was the Secretary for the OEDP Committee for several terms during its 15-year existence.

Sandee was a member of the Burt Township Fire Department from 1977 to 1988, completing the State of Michigan certified training course in firefighting in May 1978. Sandee served on the Burt Township Ambulance Corps as a certified EMT for six years from June 1988 until June 1994.

Sandee served as Chairperson of the Grand Marais Airport Fly-In Committee for several years.

In March of 1998 Sandee was elected as Chairman of the Grand Marais Medical Center Research Committee to locate a dentist to practice in the local community. The committee was successful in their endeavor.

Sandee was active in the Burt Township School PTA group and the drama club in the latter 1970s. She also chaired the Grand Marais All-Nighters Adopt-a-Highway Cleanup Crew, which began in 1992.

Sandee was honored at the fourth annual Alger County Women of Honor Ceremony in 1998 at Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore in Munising, MI.

Sandee's friend and former co-worker, Jack Hubbard, wrote:
"Sandee worked as Burt Township Secretary for over 30 years. I was fortunate enough to work with her for ten years, first as a Trustee for four years and later as Township Supervisor for six years. She handled the day-to-day operations of the office in a professional manner, keeping the Board members up to speed on the business of the Township. She was extremely educated on the legalities of the Township which was always helpful. Many times I would discuss issues with her, looking for solutions. It was joked by many Board members that we worked for Sandee. The truth is we were all better for having her on the team. I am proud of the job she did and proud to have had her for a friend. I will miss you Sandee."

Sandee loved good coffee. She enjoyed being active through cross-country skiing and walking. She enjoyed spending time with her family, socializing with friends (the All-Nighters), good music and dancing. She also valued her alone time by sitting on the deck or watching movies.

There was a small, private celebration of Sandee's life in Grand Marais, with just family and close friends, and her ashes were distributed and scattered. Sandee had already purchased a cemetery plot, so there is a rock and a plaque there.

Sandee was divorced for over 30 years, but her ex-husband, James Roger "Jim" (Judy L. Daunt) Sibbald (1937) from Gulliver, attended her gathering. When they were married, he was stationed in Munising with the US Coast Guard before transferring to Grand Marais with USCG.

Sandee is survived by her sons, Jeff (SueAnn) Sibbald of North Branch, MI, and Burr "Beaver" (Alison) Sibbald of Alanson, MI; daughter, Treva Sibbald Gorski of Williamston, MI; her grandchildren - Krista, Kyle, Nolan, and Dana; her great-grandchildren - Adalyn and Hudson; her sister, Candace (Russ); and her nephews, Jacques and Grant.

She is preceded in death by her mother, Ruby Jean (Bowers) Bean maternal grandfather, Michael Peter Panzram Bowers #56897382, maternal grandmother, Louise Anna (Peterson) Bowers #56897433; and her father, Thomas Hiram Bean, Sr.

Sandee's obituary appeared in the Grand Marais Pilot & Pictured Rocks Review.
The Editor, Mary Capogrossa, was a good friend of Sandee's.

Contributions in memory of Sandee may be made to Burt Township Fireworks Fund, Burt Township Office, P.O. Box 340, Grand Marais, MI 49839.
