Professional Basketball Player, Coach. For ten seasons (1956 to 1966), he played at the point guard and shooting guard positions in the National Basketball Association with the Syracuse Nationals and Philadelphia Warriors. He made his initial impact on the basketball court during his years at Long Island City High School. He continued on the collegiate level at Bowling Green University, where he became one of the program's all time greats. Selected by the Minneapolis Lakers during the second round of the 1954 NBA Draft, his professional career was delayed two years while he served with the United States Army Medical Corps. He signed with the Syracuse Nationals and remained with the franchise after their relocation to Philadelphia in 1963. In 687 career regular season games, he compiled 5,550 points and 1,497 assists. After retiring as a player, he began a lengthy coaching career, initially as an assistant with the Chicago Bulls. He served as the first head coach of the Seattle SuperSonics from 1967 until 1969 and coached the Washington Capitols of the American Basketball Association from 1969 to 1970. He went on to serve as head coach of the Virginia Squires of the American Basketball Association and from 1976 until 1987 and 2001 to 2002, he was an assistant coach with the Phoenix Suns. He received ABA Coach of the Year honors in 1971. Bianchi served as general manager of the New York Knicks from 1987 until 1991.
