George Smith received his medical degree from the University of Pennsylvania in 1824. He married Mary Jane Greenway Avery, the great-granddaughter of Dr. James Greenway of Dinwiddie County, Virginia, a noted botanist at the College of William and Mary.

George and Mary Smith left Virginia and settled at Live Oak Plantation in Warren County, Mississippi. Dr. Smith was an opponent of secession and opened his home as a hospital for Confederate and Union wounded soldiers during the Civil War.
