He died July 5, 2007 at Weston County Health Services in Newcastle.
Born March 19, 1918, on the family homestead West of Thornton, he was the son of Harry and Hattie M. (Owens) Ellis.
He married Ola Vinzant in Custer, S.D., on December 6, 1937, and the couple celebrated their 68th wedding anniversary prior to Ola's death in 2005. He worked as a heavy equipment operator at Federal Bentonite for 33 years, and as a long-time union steward, he was instrumental in bringing union wages into the local area.
He was a good hunter, raising his family on countless deer, 23 elk, five moose and one bear. He also loved music. His hobby was ranching and he was a cowboy at heart.
Surviving him are his four children, James Ellis of Brighton, Colo., Neoma Sutherland of Osage, William Ellis of Las Vegas, and Viola Butler of Grantsville, Utah; one sister, Marie Jorgensen of Sheridan; 12 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; and 2 great-great-grandchildren.
In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by six brothers, Lawrence, Hubert, Merle, Joe, Floyd and Raymond; and one sister, Fern Hubbell.
