Born in Whiting, VT but spent most of his early years out west where he was engaged in railroading and bridge building.
From 1844 to 1847 he served in the US Navy and then served through the Civil War with the 47th Missouri Regiment.
He moved to North Adams in the late 1880s and was employed at the Arnold Print Works until 1899 when ill health forced him to retire.
He leaves his wife, the former Emogene Baker, and three sons John W., James H., and Charles A.; two stepsons and one stepdaughter, Walter E., Willard H., and Mayme J. Davidson, all of North Adams. He also leaves five sisters and two brothers.
