He grew up in Inglenook and graduated from Phillips High School in 1951. He was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force.
John retired from American Cast Iron Pipe Company after 38 years of service where he served as a machinist. John was very passionate about his hobbies which included, golfing, bowling, fishing, and gardening. John also enjoyed deep sea fishing in Florida. He was an honest and hardworking man who also enjoyed having fun.
John was preceded in death by his parents, Joseph Pinkney Self (1909-1986) and Annie Ruth Phillips Self (1913-2009); his daughter, Sue Self; two grandchildren, Andrea & Joseph; brothers, Billy Joe Self (1933-1982), Roy Edward Self (1934-2018) and Jackie Donald Self (1935-1949).
He is survived by his loving wife, Margaret of 68 years; his children, Glenda Duncan (Ronnie), John Self (Leslie), Steve Self (Joan), Jean Robertson; five grandchildren, Stacey, Richard, David, Susanne and Sarena and six great grandchildren, Georgia, Emma, Skye, Carter, Kaleb and Samantha. He also leaves behind numerous nieces, nephews and extended family.
A funeral for John will be held on Monday, October 28th at 10:00 a.m. at Jefferson Memorial Funeral Home Chapel. Friends and family will gather an hour prior. Burial will take place at Jefferson Memorial’s adjoining gardens. Pastor Rodney Davis is officiating.
