Ashley, Roger Samuel 4/16/1940 - 10/20/2016 Ann Arbor

Roger Samuel Ashley, age 76, passed away Thursday, October 20, 2016 at his home. He was born April 16, 1940 to the late Russell Ashley and Florence (Berryman) of Ishpeming, MI.

Roger received a Bachelor of Science degree in Education at Northern Michigan University in 1962; Master of Arts, Michigan State University, 1967; and, Master of Library Science, Wayne State University, 1979. His professional career spanned several decades and included Lake Orion Schools, Bloomfield Hills Schools, and Model High School where he held various positions including: Teacher, Librarian, Media Specialist, and Technical Media Director. Roger was actively involved in the Michigan Association for Media in Education (MAME) where he served as the Executive Director. He was honored after his retirement from MAME with the Roger Ashley Award. Roger also held board positions on the Regional Education Media Council and Ponfield Consortium. Additionally, Roger was Trustee Oakland County Library, 1982-1984 and president 1984-1991; President Bloomfield Township Library, 1985-1987; Member American Association School Librarians, American Library and Association for Education Communication and Technology, National Council for Certified Teacher Education; and Phi Delta Kappa.

Roger was an organist at Christ Church Cranbrook in Bloomfield Hills and also enjoyed singing in the choir. Roger later moved to Ann Arbor and joined the loving community of St. Andrew's Episcopal Church where he continued his volunteer work as an usher and serving communion. Roger furthered his volunteering to include St. Joseph Mercy Hospital Ann Arbor and the University of Michigan for many years. He also had many interests including: reading, collecting and traveling. Roger loved spending the holidays with family and always decorated his home with a festive flare. Christmas was by far Roger's favorite holiday. He was even known to have as many as 19 Christmas trees! Roger was dearly loved and will be missed.

Roger was preceded in death by Anne Ashley (Michael) Wade of Birmingham.

A visitation to honor Roger's life will be held on Saturday, October 29, 2016 from 4:00 pm 8:00 pm at the Nie Family Funeral Home, 3767 W. Liberty Rd., Ann Arbor, MI. A funeral service will be held the following day, Sunday, October 30, 2016 at 3:00 pm at St. Andrew's Episcopal Church, 306 N. Division St., Ann Arbor, MI. Memorial contributions in Roger's name may be made to St. Andrew's Episcopal Church.
