He was the son of Norman and Amanda (Brant) Brant of Berrien County, Michigan. Norman was the son of Artaxeres and Ascenth Brant. Amanda was the daughter of Lacey and Angeline (Brown) Brant. An obituary for Joseph Brant was carried in the Ludington Daily News on 03 Nov 1952 and it reads: "Joseph Brant Dies Saturday Joseph Brant, 79, died at his farm home in Sherman township Saturday evening following a lingering illness. He was born Dec. 24, 1872, at Berrien Springs and had lived in Sherman township for 48 years. Those who survive are his widow, Emma; one son, Walter of Muskegon; and three nephews. Funeral rites will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday from fountain Methodist church with the Rev. Mr. Andrew E. Johnson, pastor of the Trinity Evangelical Free church of Ludington, Officiating. Burial will be in Fountain Cemetery. The body will remain at Stephens chapel in Scottville until time of services." DOD 01 Nov 1952
