A celebration of her life will be held Friday, Oct. 22, 2010, at 2 p.m. at St. Simon St. Jude Episcopal Church in Irmo, S.C. Caughman-Harman Funeral Home, Irmo/St. Andrews Chapel is assisting the family.
Jeanne was born July 4, 1931, in Greenville, S.C., daughter of Edward Haines "Hinkie" and Ruby Carter Gregg.
She grew up in Gastonia. She graduated from Fassifern School for Girls in Hendersonville and attended Converse College in Spartanburg, S.C. She was on the board of directors of A.B. Carter Inc. in Gastonia and Camden Military Academy, Camden, S.C.
She dedicated her life to her children and family. She also adopted the Irmo Fire Department as her own and fondly called them "her boys"!!! She was named "The Fire Mom" of the Irmo Fire Department and proudly accepted it. She was a "mom" to many children growing up in Gastonia and while her sons attended Camden Military Acad-emy. She was a very generous, thoughtful, gregarious and loving person. She never met a stranger. During her life, she enjoyed Disney World, brightly colored clothes, jewelry, babies, giving to others, beautiful flowers, Christmas and any holiday or celebration that could bring her family together.
She was preceded in death by her daughter, Minnie Ward Runyan; her parents, Edward Haines "Hinkie" and Ruby Carter Gregg; and sister, Anne G. Higginbotham.
Survivors are her loving husband of 55 years, C.L. Runyan Sr.; daughter, Ellen Crabbe and son-in-law, Lt. Col. William Crabbe III; sons and daughters-in-law, Gregg and Mary "Cindy" Runyan, Lindy and Cindy F. Runyan; one sister, Pamela G. Ivins; grandchildren, Charlie Genova and wife Melissa B. Genova, Kara Genova, Christa Genova, Alexander Runyan, Angela Runyan, Logan Runyan, Nicholas Runyan, Brandon Runyan, Frank and Daniel Pat-terson and one great- granddaughter, Ava Genova.
She will be missed by so many but we all know she will live on in our hearts forever. In lieu of flowers, please send donations to Irmo Fire Department, 6017 St. Andrews Road, Columbia, SC 29212 or Heartstrings Hospice, 115 Blarney Drive, Columbia, SC 29223.
