Willard Alfred Downes, a native of Fredericksburg, who spent most of his life as a resident of this city or nearby, died suddenly at the Mary Washington Hospital this morning at 4 o'clock following an illness from which it was thought he was recovering. The unexpected forming of a blood clot is said to have caused his death. Mr. Downes was taken to the hospital more than a month ago and following a short period there was taken back to his home. He suffered a slight relapse, however, and about two days ago was again taken to the hospital. After a day or two his condition again seemed to improve and his local physician and specialist from Richmond thought he was on the road to recovery. Yesterday he seem still better but early this morning complained of feeling ill. He died before members of his family could reach his bedside.

Mr. Downes was the son of the late Mr. and Mrs. William F. Downes and was born in Fredericksburg where he was educated in the public schools, later following the trade of master painter, in which line he was engaged in Washington, Philadelphia, Atlantic City, Asbury Park, N. J. and other points in the north. He left Fredericksburg when a young man but sixteen years ago returned to the city where he had since made his home.

Mr. Downes was a man of splendid physique and constitution and had never been ill in his life until the attack which ended with his death. As a young man he well known in the this section as a baseball player and in other lines of athletic endeavor and was highly proficient as an amateur boxer. He would have been 53 years old on the 15th of next month.

Mr. Downes is survived by his wife, the former Miss Kaiser, of Baltimore, Md., whom he married 23 years ago. He also is survived by five sons, Willard A. Downes, jr., and Fielder Downes of Philadelphia, and Carroll, Kenneth and Melvin. The latter are twins. One daughter also survives, Rosalie J. Downes. The children range in ages from 22 to 16.

In addition to his immediate family Mr. Downes is survived by three sisters, Mrs. William Goldsmith and Mrs. L. G. Roach, of this city, and Mrs. J. G. Rodgers,of Washington.

Funeral arrangements have not been definitely made but services are expected to take place from St. George's Church with the following as pallbearers: Lewis Wooding, F. L. W. Green, M. L. Bolling, Conway Chichester, Dr. J. E. Cole, Gilbert M. Hunt, C. E. Wright.
