Burton Wilbur Haglan, 82, of Des Moines died Dec. 16, 2006, at Mercy Hospice in Johnston.

Burton Haglan was born Dec. 10, 1924, in Marshalltown to Emmanuel and Beth (Carpenter) Haglan. He grew up in Marshalltown, and after high school, served in the United States Navy during World War II — from 1942–46. During this time, he served on the USS Gherardi and USS Barr. Following his military service, Burton attended Creighton University where he received a Bachelor of Science degree in chemistry. He received a teaching certificate from Buena Vista College and later obtained a Master of Science degree from the University of Mississippi in Oxford. His marriage to Evelyn Mae England took place Aug. 19, 1948. During his early working career, he was employed by the Iowa State Department of Health and the city of Cedar Rapids as a milk sanitarian. He taught high school science and chemistry at Burnside in the Central Webster Community School District and, from 1964–86, was an instructor of biology and botany at Drake University in Des Moines. He retired from teaching in 1986. Burton was a member of the Hawkeye Knife Club, American Society of Military Insignia Collectors, National Fishing Lure Collectors, and the Tin Can Sailors.
He was preceded in death by his wife; a granddaughter, Kenna Haglan; and three siblings, Mary Rohrer, Adeline Brown and Howard Haglan.
He is survived by one son, Barry Haglan of Des Moines; one daughter, Colleen Haglan-Lynch of Prole; his companion, Phyllis Kingsbury of Des Moines; and six grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
