Margaret Juanita Burton, 87, of Atlantic City, went home to be with the Lord Monday, October 21, 2019.
Sister Burton was born in Kenton, Delaware to Mary and Gilbert Sammons. She was the oldest of five sisters. Sister Margaret's parents helped to influence her religious upbringing. She received her religious foundation in Byrd A.M.E. Church of Clayton, Delaware. Sister Burton in her youth attended Sunday School, was an YPDer and worked with the local Women's Missionary Society.
In 1953, she met and married Rev. Horace E. Burton. As a first lady, she served throughout the First Episcopal District with her husband in the following churches: Byrd AME Church of Clayton, Delaware; Richard Allen AME of St. Georges, Bermuda; Bethel AME Church of Woodbury, New Jersey; St. Paul AME Church of Cambridge, Massachusetts; Bethel AME Church of Springfield, Massachusetts; Monumental AME Church of Steelton, Pennsylvania; and for twenty years at St. James AME Church of Atlantic City, New Jersey.
During her time as First Lady, Mrs. Burton held many offices, chaired committees and received special licensing. In 1994, she received her life membership from the First Episcopal District Women's Missionary Society. She served as Area Chairperson for the WMS and First Vice President for the New Jersey Conference. She was an active member of the First Episcopal District M-Swavo and served as president for the New Jersey and Atlantic City District Ministers Wives and Ministers Widows (MWMW) Organization where she served as president for nine years. She was also president of the Interdenominational MWMW of Atlantic City and vicinity, where she was active since 1991.
Sister Burton was not only active in the church. She worked as a Licensed Practical Nurse. During her nursing career she was employed by: Massachusetts General Hospital in Springfield, Massachusetts; Polyclinic Medical Center in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania; and lastly, Atlantic City Medical Center in Atlantic City, New Jersey, from where she retired in 1997. Until 2018, she worked 15 years part-time as an Accelerated Reader's Aide at Chelsea Heights Elementary School in Atlantic City, New Jersey.
Sister Margaret Burton was an active member of St. James A.M.E. Church, Atlantic City since 1981. During those thirty-eight years, she served as a Steward; regularly attended Wednesday Night Bible Study and Adult Sunday School; and was an advisor for the Anointed Spiritual Praise Dance Ministry, Pastor's Aid Ministry and the Groce Levy Health Ministry.
She is survived by: three daughters, Clynthia I. Burton, MFA, Tracee McSwain, PhD, Education and JD (Harvey), Rev. Zina Thompkins, MDiv. (Elisha); and one son, Horace Edward Burton, Jr., JD (Diana); eight grandchildren, Rahmon Burton (Catherine), Damon Trueitt (Yuel), Armon Trueitt, Margaret Burton, Jordan McSwain, Z. Ashley Thompkins, Brian Thompkins and Jade McSwain; two great-grandchildren, Kai and Cami Burton; sisters, Ernestine Holden, Theresa Johnson, Gloria Harrison (Sonny) and Clynthia Flanigan; sister-in-law, Ruth Ann Burton; special friend/sister, Sylvia Caine of Bermuda; special nephews, Stephen Burton, Michael Johnson and Lex Harrison; special nieces, Beverly Weathersby and Jondella Flanigan and a host of other loving nieces and nephews; and other family and friends. Also sharing her memories are: her adopted children; Rev. Betty Furbert-Woolridge of Bermuda, Marion Smart, Terry Robinson; Rev. Andrea Foster, Rev. Stanley Heart Sr., Sharon Hearst, Debbie Taliaferro, Rev. Wendy Mason-Harris; and her own beloved, Pastor Rev. Dr. James Coaxum III.
Sister Margaret Burton loved to sew, crochet, knit and do ceramics. She enjoyed playing a good game of Uno. She enjoyed watching Cable News and The Family Feud on television. Sister Burton loved her family. There were many nights she stayed up late talking and laughing with them. She loved God, her children, grands and great-grands, sisters, extended family the WMS, her St. James A.M.E. Church family and her pastor, Rev. Dr. James Coaxum III.
Her Favorite Gospel Song "Completely Yes" by Sandra Crouch.
Margaret's favorite scripture is "Oh how good and pleasant it is, when brethren dwell together in unity…! Psalm 133.
To God be the Glory for the Great Things He has done! Though Sister Burton is gone, her indomitable spirit and loving kindness will be with us forever.
Funeral services will be 11 am Saturday, October 26, 2019, at St. James A.M.E. Church, 101 North New York Avenue, Atlantic City, where friends may call from 9 am.
Interment will be 2 pm Thursday, October 31, 2019, at Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery, 2465 Chesapeake City Road, Bear, Delaware.
