Daughter of William and Calista (Comstock) Hammond, she grew up in Illinois and married George Washington Rogers February 9,1854 in her home in Rock Island Co. Illinois. There is some question as to whether the couple was actually married in 1853 however the marriage was not recorded until 1854. They lived next door to her father until 1870 when she, George and eight children travelled to Kansas in two covered wagons drawn by ox teams. They first settled in Washington Co., moving to Smith Co. in 1875. They moved to Ash Rock Township, Rooks Co., KS in 1878. George and Mahala were two of the thirteen founding members of the Ash Rock Church in Ash Rock Township, Rooks Co., KS, March 25, 1878.
She was the mother of 12 children: William,Elijah,Andrew,George,Delaus,Calista,Allen,Jonathan,Elizabeth,twins-Rachel and Wilson,Leander.
