John Lee Brandon was born on April 23, 1909 in Tennessee, the son of John Edgar Brandon (1871–1950) and Evelyn "Evie" (Black) Brandon (1889–1968).
He had been a mill operator living in Murfreesboro, Rutherford County, but he was single and suffered from schizophrenia, and by the time he was 45 years old, he died of unspecified causes on December 31, 1954 at rural Nashville's Central State Hospital, where he had been for almost 24½ years. Burial was on January 1, 1955 in Woodlawn Cemetery, Nashville.
