David Benton Small, 80 of Athens, died Thursday morning, October 24, 2019 at his residence.

He was a lifelong resident of McMinn County and was a son of the late Tom and Nell Hennessee Small. He was also preceded in death by a sister Bobbie Small Blazer.

He was a member of First Baptist Church of Athens, where he enjoyed attending. He graduated from McMinn County High School in 1958 and served in the U.S. Army with the 82nd Airborne Division, during which time he made 14 jumps. He was associated with Bowater in the papermill department for 38 years until his retirement. He enjoyed going to car shows in his 1930 Model A Coupe, and traveled through all the United States. He enjoyed bluegrass music, played the harmonica and enjoyed jamming in Decatur with other harmonics.

He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Doris Small; daughter, Sandi Bohannon and her husband Mike all of Athens; brother, Tommy Small and his wife Ann of Pigeon Forge,TN; granddaughter, Alisha B. Letner; grandson, Michael Bohannon; great-granddaughter, Alayna Letner; three nieces, Donna Sue Walker, Jamie Blazer and Julie Small; and brother-in-law, James Blazer of Athens.

A funeral service will be conducted 1:00 pm, Saturday, October 26, 2019 in the chapel of Smith Funeral Home with Dr. Bill Henard officiating. Interment will follow in Rogers Creek Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 10:30am-12:30pm Saturday at the funeral home prior to the service. Pallbearers will be Mack Huey, Danny Blevins, James Blaxer, Edwin Sliger, Jerry Howell, and Mickey Watters.
