Aviator, explorer, first man to fly from England to Australia, war veteran & contemporary of Charles Lindburgh.
Born december 4 1892 in Semaphore a beach side suburb of Adelaide, South Australia to parents of Scotish birth, one of three brothers. Colin, Keith and Ross Smith. He grew up in South Australia, joined the Australian Army in 1914, Served in the infantry during the Galipoli campaign , transfered to the Australian Flying Corps 1917. In 1919 with his brother Keith and two engineers/mechanics (W.H. Shiers & J.M. Bennet) became the first to fly from England to Australia and won the £10,000 prize offered by the Australian government.
Both he and J.M. Bennet died in the early 1920's while test flying a new aircraft in preparation for an attempt to fly around the World.
Ross Macpherson Smith was Buried with full military honors at a state funeral befitting his status as a national hero at the North Road Anglican Cemetery on the 15th June 1922.
