Journalist, Author. She graduated from Agnes Scott College in Decatur, Georgia in 1947, and worked for the Associated Press for 30 years, starting out as a secretary. In the 1960s she began working as a journalist becoming an advocate in the Civil Rights Movement, covering stories like African-American students being blocked from entering the University of Alabama, and Charlayne Hunter becoming the first black student to enroll at the University of Georgia. She interviewed wives of Navy men missing in action or held captive in North Vietnam in 1969, and was given exclusive interviews with 2nd Lieutenant William L. Calley Jr. before he was convicted of his role in the My Lai massacre. She followed Doctor Martin Luther King Jr. from the time he was a little-known preacher until his death. She was the only journalist allowed in the King home on the day he was assassinated. She wrote the book, "My Time With the Kings" which was published in 2016. In 1979 she became an Associate Editor at U.S. News & World Report. In 1988 she joined CNN, working there full time until 1999.
