According to regimental records, David was not a sharpshooter. He initially enlisted and served as a Musician. This was an important roll as drummers were often the only means of communication over the din of the battlefield.

He had to fire at a target 200 yards away while at rest and fire offhand at a target 100 yards away without missing and without averaging more than 5 inches from the center. He mustered in to Company L on Christmas Eve, 1861. He fought in every battle the unit engaged in, including Gettysburg. On June 4, 1864, he was severely wounded at the battle of Cold Harbor, Virginia. He was hospitalized until he was discharged for disability on December 30, 1864. It had been three full years since he enlisted, and he was now an old veteran at the age of 19. After the war, he lived most of his life in Crow Wing county, Minnesota. He married Mathilda Conzett and they had five children. He died at the Soldiers Home in Minneapolis.
