Susan Kaye Peters was born May 14 1945, in Majove CA to James and Elinore Schoen. Sue was the eldest of 7, and moved with her family to Littleton CO, and then to Phoenix AZ where they settled.Sue finished highschool and spent her young adulthood there. She met and married Bill Peters in June 1969, and together they moved to Kerrville Texas, where all 3 of their children were born.
Due to circumstances beyond her control, she returned to AZ, this time to Flagstaff, in 1980 with the purpose of gettinga college education. She graduated from Northern Arizona University with a 3.8 in Business with a minor in Computer Programming in 1986at the age of 42. She got a job at the Federal Census Bureau in Suitland MD and the family moved there in December 1987. She was a programmer and statistician there until her retirement in May 2010.
Sue didn’t just have a head for numbers and computer languages, she also had a creative side. She did crafts of every kind; macrame frog towel holders, plant holders, wind chimes, dusters, decorative bead trees, to name a few. Another love of hers was plants. She would buy the sickliest looking plant and patiently nurse it back to health. She discovered the fun of road trips and enjoyed traveling to see different attractions. But her favorite road trip was one that took her to her children and grandchildren.
Sue chose to put God first in her life August 1968, and kept that promise close to her heart throughout the many battles life sent her way. She faithfully took her children to her only Place of Refuge, and her children learned to read during their morning family bible studies.
Finances were difficult at the beginning of her career. But Sue patiently dug her little family out of poverty, and became a proud homeowner in June 2002 in White Plains MD. She lived there until just before her death. Her refusal to give up when odds were stacked against her influenced many. She taught her children to work hard for whatever they wanted in life, a lesson in reality that would serve them well. She never met a stranger, and had a smile and a terrible joke for everyone. She loved(!!!!) to tell stories, particularly about her children and grandchildren. She came in contact with hundreds of people in the healthcare field (captive audience) over the years, and so many of them would stop by her room just to chat and get a laugh.
Her first big health scare started in 2011 with colon cancer. She fought it and did well until it returned in 2016 and she fought it once again. Then her veins started to deteriorate, in her heart and other places. Numerous stents and replacement valves were next. At the beginning of 2019 her heart stopped. She was quickly revived, but her kidneys never recovered so she began her dialysis journey. Hospitals, nursing homes, and assisted living facilities finally ended when she was stable enough to move into her brand new apartment in Charleston SCat the end of July. She loved her new place for 2 months, until her heart stopped again for the final time on September 27, 2019.
Sue is preceded in death by her parents, and brothers George and Tom Schoen. She is remembered and sorely missed by her children; Jennifer Cuppy, Mark Peters, and Kelly Peters, grandchildren; Lauren Cuppy and Kellen Cuppy, brothers; Joe and Charles Schoen, sisters; Jeanette Field and Cathy Bishop, numerous nieces, nephews, andin laws, and friends like family from all over the US.
