Ronald Clayton Gordon, Virginia Commissioner, Scientist, Professor, of Silver Spring, MA, died peacefully at Washington Adventist Hospital, Takoma Park, MD.

Ronald was baptized as an infant at Saint Stephen's Episcopal Church, Petersburg, VA and attended public schools in Augusta, GA, Charles Town, W.VA, and Petersburg, VA.

In 1964 Ronald was initiated into the Ruhani Satsang spiritual discipline and meditative life. At the time of his death, he was associated with Sant Bani Ashram in New Hampshire.

In 1950 Ronald graduated from Peabody High School, Petersburg, VA. He received the bachelor's and master's degrees in physics from Virginia State University, Ettrick, VA and the Ph.D. in biomedical engineering from the University of Virginia, Charlottesville, VA.

After service in the Korean Conflict as an officer in the U.S. Army, Ronald made Washington, D.C. his home and went to work as a research physicist for the National Bureau of Standards (now the National Institute of Standards and Technology). He and Vivian also owned a jazz club in Washington, D.C. called The Eden Rock in the 1960s. Later, he worked as physicist at McDonnell-Douglas Aircraft, Santa Monica, CA.

In 1957, Ronald married his high school classmate and college sweetheart, Vivian Verdell (deceased). This marriage produced his two beloved children.. That marriage ended in divorce. In 1987, he Ronald married Zarina Sidi (Anne).

In 1968, an automobile accident left Ronald a quadriplegic. Following the accident, he earned his Ph.D. in biomedical engineering from the University of Virginia. He taught in three academic departments at the University of Virginia Medical School; was employed as a scientific expert at the U.S. Army Intelligence Foreign Science and Technology Center; and served as the Commissioner of Rehabilitative Services for the Commonwealth of Virginia under Gov. George Allen. He retired from the Allen administration as director of the Virginia Neurotrauma Program in 1997. Ronald and Anne moved to Ghana, West Africa in 1999, to design and build a religious sanctuary and returned to the U.S. in 2003.

A memorial service was held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 28, 2004 at Saint Paul's Episcopal Church, Rock Creek Parish, Rock Creek Church Road and Webster Street, N.W., Washington, D.C. 20011.
