After graduating from Scottsbluff High School, Richard joined the Navy. Before being sent to Viet Nam, he married the love of his life, Sharon (Sherri) Wellman, a farm girl from Orchard, NE. They were married for 54 years and had 3 children, 7 grandchildren and several great grandchildren After his discharge he attended Area 10 Community College in Cedar Rapids, IA. He retired from Napa Auto Parts after 20 years, then delivered Meals on Wheels and was a blood donor for Bonfils Blood Bank until health would not permit it. He was a 20 year plus member of Arvada #161 Post, an active member of the Honor Guard, a member of the Colorado Patriot Guard honored to toll the Honor Bell and a member of VFW. He had the great honor of being selected to join Northern Colorado Honor Flight to Arlington National Cemetery and was able to fulfill his dream to stand on Omaha Beach. Survivors beside Sherri included: sons Jeff Tompkins of Westminster and Scott Tompkins (Heather Schafer) of Dacono; daughter Kimberli Tompkins (Robert Walker) of Wheat RIdge; grandchildren Christeena (Mike) Patrick of SIdney, NE., Ryan (Brittany) Cook of Broomfield, Rachael Cook (Marc MacArthur) of Arvada, David Tompkins of Frederick, Julia Tompkins of Frederick, Chase Worthley of Arvada, and Arizona Worthley of Arvada; and siblings Don Tompkins of Westminster and Judy (Al) Banghart of Scottsbluff, NE. Memorial Service was held at Aspen Mortuary at 6370 Union in Arvada.
