John was the son of John Thomas Butts and Lucy Warren Butts. He was born in Tennessee and came to Missouri with his parents when he was 7 years old.
He married Ellen Sails and to this union were born 11 children (10 daughters and 1 son). Ellen passed about 9 years before him.
He was united in marriage 4 years ago to Lucinda Givens, who departed this life 2 years later.
He professed faith in Christ early in life and united with the Pleasant Hill Baptist Church. He was ordained as a deacon in the Cabool Baptist Church. Five years later he moved his membership from Cabool to Summersville, where his membership remained until his death. His life has been clean and pure and he had a conviction that every church member should do likewise.
