World War II Soviet Union Major General. Born in Petrovsk, Russia, he served as a Major General in command of the 316th Rifles, 8th Guards Rifle Division, Russian Army. In November 1941, during the Battle of Moscow, when the German Army was attacking the region, Major General Panfilow's 316th Rifles managed to significantly delay the enemy's advance on the capital, buying time for the defenders of the city. On November 18, when a group of correspondents with the People's Commissar of Defense was at Major General Panfilov's command post in the village of Guseniovo, they came under a heavy enemy mortar attack and Major General Panfilov was killed by a shell splinter at the age of 48. On April 12, 1942, Major General Panfilow was posthumously awarded the title Hero of the Soviet Union.
